If you see one film this year, Greenlining recommends that you see ‘Inside Job,’ Charles Ferguson’s meticulous and infuriating documentary about the causes and the consequences of the financial crisis. Ferguson not only gets it right but also gets a strong interview from Robert Gnaizda, who emerges as one of the film’s true heroes!

Measure by Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim) Would Require Insurance Companies to Report Contracting with California-Based Diverse Businesses

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim) introduced legislation this week aimed at boosting small businesses and job creation related to California’s insurance industry. The bill, known as A.B. 53 and modeled on a successful program long used by the California Public Utilities Commission, would require insurance companies doing business in California and with annual revenues exceeding $25 million to report how much business they do with firms owned by minorities, women and disabled veterans, and what percentage of those contracts are with companies that have most of their employees in California.

Real Foreclosure Relief Can’t Wait

No less an expert than Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize-winning economist and president-elect of the International Economic Association, has concluded that that there is a real answer to the foreclosure crisis: Principal reduction. Forcing banks to write down the principal of troubled loans is, as Stiglitz told the Sacramento Bee, the “best option for the country… For banks, it means coming to terms with reality, with the fact that they lent money on the basis of prices that were inflated by a bubble. It ends the fiction that they will get repaid the full amount lent.”

Greenlining Urges Swift Action to Fill Remaining Slots With Diverse Representatives

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – With the partially-formed Citizens Redistricting Commission scheduled to hold its first meeting today, The Greenlining Institute urged the eight members selected so far to move quickly to fill the six remaining seats and to ensure that these new members reflect California’s broad diversity as much as possible. The first eight commissioners, chosen by lottery Nov. 18, include only one Latino and one African American and no representatives from San Diego or Orange counties as well as most of the Central Valley.

Greenlining Institute Launching Campaign For Fair District Lines

BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA – The Greenlining Institute today urged the just-chosen first eight members of the new Citizens Redistricting Commission to ensure that the final membership represents all of California’s communities. Greenlining has been closely monitoring the selection process with an eye to ensuring that the body reflects the state’s full diversity. Eight of 36 finalists were chosen as commission members today in a lottery that was streamed live at http://www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov.
