Tuition Relief

California’s public universities are experiencing a sharp decrease in state investment.  Students have borne the brunt of compensating for these shortfalls in the form of excessive tuition (“fee”) hikes, which amount to essentially a backdoor tax on vulnerable students.

To address this, in 2007-08 we filed the state’s first ever student-led, volunteer-driven ballot initiative to freeze tuition for five years in the UC and CSU systems.  Under the banner of Students and Families for Tuition Relief Now, students on over thirty campuses throughout California collected signatures in an attempt to qualify for the statewide ballot.  While the initiative did not qualify for the November 2008 ballot, students are already planning for their next attempt.

Assembly Bill 2372

We also sponsored the College Affordability Act of 2008 (AB 2372), a proposed law mirroring the student-led ballot initiative and introduced by Assemblymember Joe Coto (D-San Jose).  In its first attempt, the law passed the Assembly Higher Education and Revenue and Taxation Committees.
