Education Pipeline

There is a growing need for qualified medical professionals in all health fields to meet the health demands of a diverse and aging population. The future of California's health rests in educating and providing a diverse group of students the tools to become tomorrow's health professionals. Because of this, education pipeline programs are crucial in the mission to develop a vibrant, well-equipped health workforce that is linguistically and culturally competent.

Programs:

Greenlining believes that in order to achieve this goal of a diverse health workforce, there is a need for health career pipeline programs at every level of education. To view existing pipeline programs and learn more information about each one, please refer to this list.  [link to pdf]

Partners:

California Health Workforce Alliance (CHWA):

The CHWA is a public-private partnership that grew out of the Connecting the Dots Initiative, which was organized by the Public Health Institute and UC Berkeley School of Public Health and focused on creating methods to increase health workforce diversity. It aims to strengthen the work of health career pipeline programs. The CHWA is comprised of members that work in health education at the UC, CSU and community college level as well as local public health organizations.

California Health Professions Consortiums (CHPC):

CHPC is a consortium which seeks to promote a health workforce that is reflective of the diverse needs in California communities. It does this by advocating for legislation that promotes health workforce diversity. Not only does it develop and support pipeline programs for students at all levels of their educational career but it also works to strengthen the efficacy of existing pipelines.

Internal Evaluation of Pipelines:

Beyond developing pipelines, it is necessary to ensure that these existing programs are achieving the goals that they were created to achieve. Through the Bay Area Coalition to Increase Diversity in the Health Workforce, Greenlining is working to help expand individual pipeline program's ability and capacity to evaluate their efforts. Internal evaluations reinforce the need to strive for improvement and increase success within pipeline programs. This process emphasizes the need to collect both descriptive and quantitative data to document and analyze the long term progress of their students. These evaluations aim to foster dialogue about methods to ensure the recruitment and retention of diverse students with health career aspirations.
